Equations with Brackets
Solve ax = b, x ÷ a = b, ax + b = c and a(x + b) = c
What your child practices
Solving one-variable equations, including ones with brackets and negative numbers, checking by substitution, and spotting a common mistake with the distributive property.
Alabama Course of Study content standard: 8.11 · solving linear equations that need the distributive property
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Undo brackets by dividing both sides, or by expanding.
- Do the same thing to both sides.
- Check by putting your answer back into the equation.
Example: Solve 2(x + 3) = 14. Divide both sides by 2: x + 3 = 7. Subtract 3: x = 4. Answer: x = 4
Equations with Brackets in Alabama
In the Alabama Course of Study, this is unit 10 of 17 in 8th grade Math, after Tables, Graphs & Linear Relations and before Congruent Shapes.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Question 1
Which value of x makes 3x + 7 = 19 true?
- 4
- 3
- 5
- 6
4
Hint: Substitute each value. Only x = 4 gives 3 × 4 + 7 = 19.
Question 2
Solve for x: 8x = -40
answer box
-5
Hint: Divide both sides by 8: x = -40 ÷ 8 = -5.
Question 3
Solve for x: 4(x + 1) = -4
answer box
-2
Hint: Divide both sides by 4: x + 1 = -1. Then subtract 1: x = -2. Check: 4(-2 + 1) = -4.
Question 4
Solve for x: 2(x + 1) = -8
answer box
-5
Hint: Divide both sides by 2: x + 1 = -4. Then subtract 1: x = -5. Check: 2(-5 + 1) = -8.
Question 5
Amir buys 3 notebooks that cost the same, plus a pen for $2. The total is $14. How much does one notebook cost, in dollars?
answer box
4
Hint: Let n be the price of a notebook: 3n + 2 = 14. Subtract 2, then divide by 3: n = 4.
Question 6
Solve for x: x ÷ 5 = -5
answer box
-25
Hint: Multiply both sides by 5: x = -5 × 5 = -25.
