Rhyme Time

Words that sound alike

What your child practices

Hearing rhymes (cat, hat) and spotting a word that doesn't rhyme. Rhyming games build the listening skills behind reading.

Alabama Course of Study content standard: K.9 · hearing and making rhymes

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Rhyming words end with the same sound.
  2. Cat and hat rhyme. They both end in “at”.
  3. Say both words. Do the ends sound the same?

Example: Which one rhymes with “cake”? snake or sun? Cake ends with “ake”. Snake ends with “ake” too. Answer: snake

Rhyme Time in Alabama

In the Alabama Course of Study, this is unit 3 of 12 in Kindergarten English Language Arts, after First Sounds and before Clap the Beat.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
