Focus areas

Units

  1. Unit 1

    Light

Natural and artificial light, things that make light and things that reflect it, shadows, transparent, translucent and opaque materials, mirrors, refraction, and how light technology affects people and wildlife.

Learning standard: 3.P2U1.1 · the relationship between light, objects and the human eye

  2. Unit 2

    Sound

Vibrations and sound waves, pitch and volume, how sound travels through different materials but not through empty space, echoes and absorbing sound, how we hear, and how noise and sound devices affect people and animals.

Learning standard: 3.P2U1.2; 3.P4U1.3 · sound waves, and how light and sound carry energy

  3. Unit 3

    Sense & Respond

How people, animals and plants sense and respond to their environment: the nervous system, reflexes, special animal senses and plant responses to light, gravity and touch.

Learning standard: 3.L1U1.5; 3.L1U1.6 · inside and outside structures of plants and animals, and how they react to the world around them

  4. Unit 4

    Adaptations & Habitats

Practices habitats, body and behavior adaptations, camouflage, migration and hibernation, and how plants and animals rely on each other (pollination, seed dispersal, soil nutrients).

Learning standard: 3.L1U1.5 · structures that help plants and animals survive, grow and reproduce

  5. Unit 5

    Energy on the Move

Practices energy sources, how energy moves from a source to an object or living thing to cause action, and how people use their senses to detect heat, light and sound.

Learning standard: 3.P4U1.3 · light and sound carrying energy from place to place

  6. Unit 6

    Energy from the Sun

Practices how plants get the materials they need for growth mostly from air and water, and how the energy in animals' food was once energy from the sun.

Learning standard: 3.L2U1.7; 3.E1U1.4 · the Sun as the main source of energy, and how its energy flows to and among living things

  7. Unit 7

    Surviving in a Habitat

Practices why some animals live in groups, how small differences in traits can help some individuals survive, and why some organisms do well in a habitat while others cannot survive there.

Learning standard: 3.L2U1.8 · how organisms depend on each other

  8. Unit 8

    Matter Moves in Ecosystems

Practices how matter moves among plants, animals, decomposers and the environment, with Pacific Northwest examples like salmon feeding forests after they spawn.

Learning standard: 3.L2U1.7; 3.L2U1.8 · food chains, and how energy and matter move among living things
