Coordinate Grid
Plot points (x, y)
What your child practices
Naming and plotting points in the first quadrant of the coordinate grid, and reading what a point means in a real situation.
California Content Standards learning standard: 5.G.1; 5.G.2 · graphing and naming points in the first quadrant, and interpreting points in context
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- A point is written (x, y).
- Start at (0, 0). Go right x units, then up y units.
- Points on the x-axis have y = 0.
Example: Start at (0, 0). Go 4 right and 2 up. Where are you? x = 4, y = 2. Answer: (4, 2)
Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
A plant grows 5 cm each week. On a graph, x is weeks and y is height. Which point shows week 4?
- (20, 4)
- (5, 4)
- (4, 9)
- (4, 20)
(4, 20)
Hint: After 4 weeks the plant is 4 × 5 = 20 cm. x first, then y.
Question 2
What are the coordinates of point A?
- (9, 3)
- (8, 2)
- (9, 2)
- (2, 9)
(9, 2)
Hint: Go across first (x), then up (y).
Question 3
Which point is on the x-axis?
- (3, 2)
- (2, 2)
- (0, 2)
- (2, 0)
(2, 0)
Hint: Points on the x-axis have a y-coordinate of 0.
Question 4
Start at (0, 0). Go 3 units right and 2 units up. Where are you?
- (2, 3)
- (5, 0)
- (3, 2)
- (3, 3)
(3, 2)
Hint: The first number is how far right. The second is how far up.
Question 5
Point A is at (2, 1) and point B is at (2, 9). How many units apart are they?
- 8
- 2
- 7
- 10
8
Hint: The points line up, so subtract the numbers that change.
Question 6
Point A is at (2, 6) and point B is at (2, 7). How many units apart are they?
- 2
- 3
- 1
- 13
1
Hint: The points line up, so subtract the numbers that change.
