Grade 6 Science
10 units matched to the Manitoba Curriculum.
Learning focus
- What causes events to happen?
- How are time and the motion of the Solar System related?
- How are organisms similar and different from each other?
Units
Unit 1
Think Like a Scientist
Planning a fair test, working safely, design criteria and constraints, simple coding ideas such as conditions and variables, and how science and technology connect to careers and communities.
Learning outcome: SCI.6.C.3, SCI.6.D.5 · planning fair tests, safety and solving design problems
Unit 2
Gravity & Friction
Working out net force, telling balanced from unbalanced forces, mass versus weight on the Moon and other planets, and when friction helps or causes problems.
Learning outcome: SCI.6.E.1, SCI.6.E.2 · gravity, weight and forces such as friction that act against motion
Unit 3
Buoyancy
Practises the idea that a fluid pushes up on objects, why some things float and others sink (density, shape and the fluid), and how ships, submarines and life jackets use buoyancy.
Learning outcome: SCI.6.E.3 · buoyancy: balanced and unbalanced forces, density, and floating and sinking
Unit 4
Flight
The four forces of flight and how balanced and unbalanced forces change motion, how air makes flight possible, how birds, bats and insects fly, and the impacts of aviation.
Learning outcome: SCI.6.E.2 · lift and other forces that oppose gravity
Unit 5
Stored Energy
Practises the idea that objects can hold stored energy (chemical, elastic, height) and that it can be transferred to cause events such as motion, heat and light.
Learning outcome: SCI.6.E.4, SCI.6.E.5 · stored energy in objects, and how it is transferred to cause events
Unit 6
Circuits
Conductors and insulators, what each part of a circuit does, and how series and parallel circuits behave and where each is used.
Learning outcome: SCI.6.E.6 · how electricity flows in battery-powered circuits
Unit 7
Earth, Moon and Sun
Why we have day and night, seasons, Moon phases, eclipses and tides, and which bodies give off light and which reflect it.
Learning outcome: SCI.6.E.8, SCI.6.E.9, SCI.6.E.10 · Earth's rotation and tilt, day and night, and the seasons
Unit 8
Galaxies & Space Tech
Our place in the Milky Way, light-years and other galaxies, telescopes, satellites and Canadian space technology, and how Indigenous peoples have observed and shared knowledge of the sky.
Learning outcome: SCI.6.E.11 · the Sun as a star among billions of others in our galaxy
Unit 9
Traits & Fossils
Practises how plants and animals pass traits to their offspring, the difference between inherited traits and learned skills, and how fossils give evidence of how organisms have changed over time.
Learning outcome: SCI.6.E.12, SCI.6.E.13, SCI.6.E.15, SCI.6.E.17 · heredity, traits and behaviours, and fossils as evidence of change
Unit 10
Sorting Living Things
Telling mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish apart, vertebrates from invertebrates, the kingdoms, and the levels of classification.
Learning outcome: SCI.6.E.14 · the variety of organisms and how they are grouped
