Coordinate Grid

Plot points (x, y)

What your child practices

Naming and plotting points in the first quadrant of the coordinate grid, and reading what a point means in a real situation.

Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards benchmark: 5.3.7.1; 5.3.7.3 · graphing ordered pairs in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A point is written (x, y).
  2. Start at (0, 0). Go right x units, then up y units.
  3. Points on the x-axis have y = 0.

Example: Start at (0, 0). Go 4 right and 2 up. Where are you? x = 4, y = 2. Answer: (4, 2)

Coordinate Grid in Minnesota

In the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards, this is unit 9 of 12 in 5th grade Math, after Parentheses & Expressions and before Multiply & Divide Fractions.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
