New York State Learning Standards learning standard: 9.5a; 9.6a · feudalism, manors and the Church in Western Europe after the fall of Rome
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Feudalism linked people by land and loyalty: king, nobles and knights, then peasants and serfs. A vassal promised a lord loyalty and military service.
- The Church guided religious life and had great power in politics and education, sometimes clashing with kings.
- The Magna Carta said rulers are not above the law. The Black Death spread by fleas on rats along trade routes.
Example: In the feudal system, what did a vassal promise a lord? The lord gave the vassal land. In return the vassal gave loyalty and fought for him. Answer: loyalty and military service
