Telling Time

Analog, digital and 24-hour clocks

What your child practises

Reading analog clocks to the minute, switching between 12-hour (a.m./p.m.) and 24-hour time, and working out how long events last.

NWT Curriculum learning standard: How to tell time with analog and digital clocks, using 12- and 24-hour clocks

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. An analog clock has hands. A digital clock shows numbers.
  2. A 24-hour clock counts the whole day: 13:00 is 1 p.m.
  3. For p.m. times after 12, add 12 to the hour.

Example: Write 3:45 p.m. on a 24-hour clock. It is p.m., so add 12 to the hour. 3 + 12 = 15. Answer: 15:45
