Nunavut Curriculum approved guide: Alberta Mathematics K–9 (2007), Number · comparing and ordering positive fractions, decimals (to thousandths) and whole numbers

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Turn everything into the same form, such as decimals.
  2. Compare place by place, starting at the left.
  3. A fraction becomes a decimal when you divide the top by the bottom.

Example: Which is greater, 3/5 or 0.62? 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6, or 0.600. Compare 0.600 and 0.620. 0.620 is greater. Answer: 0.62
