Multi-Step Equations

Brackets, fractions and both sides

What your child practises

Solving linear equations with brackets, fractions and variables on both sides, checking solutions, and turning word problems into equations.

Nunavut Curriculum approved guide: Alberta Mathematics K–9 (2007), Patterns and Relations · solving linear equations and single-variable inequalities

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Expand brackets first.
  2. Collect like terms.
  3. Then undo adding or subtracting, and finally multiplying or dividing.

Example: 2(x + 3) = 14 Expand: 2x + 6 = 14. Subtract 6: 2x = 8. Divide by 2: x = 4. Answer: x = 4
