Units

  1. Unit 1

    Food Chains & Webs

Producers, consumers and decomposers, herbivores, carnivores and omnivores, how energy moves along a food chain, and why a food web is a more complete picture.

Curriculum outcome: Life Science: Habitats · food chains and food webs, and what happens when one population is removed

  2. Unit 2

    Habitats & Communities

Habitats as places that meet the needs of living things, communities of interacting species, why habitats have limits, how species depend on each other, and how human actions can help or harm.

Curriculum outcome: Life Science: Habitats · habitats, populations and communities, and how habitat loss affects living things

  3. Unit 3

    Adaptations & Habitats

Practises habitats, body and behaviour adaptations, camouflage, migration and hibernation, and how plants and animals rely on each other (pollination, seed dispersal, soil nutrients).

Curriculum outcome: Life Science: Habitats · how plants and animals survive where they live, with features that meet their needs

  4. Unit 4

    Our Local Habitat

Children study a local habitat by asking questions, observing, collecting data and showing results, and consider how their own actions affect habitats.

Curriculum outcome: Life Science: Habitats · studying a local habitat: questions, observations, data and personal actions that conserve it

  5. Unit 5

    Built to Survive

Children compare external features and behaviours of animals and plants and link them to how they meet their needs in their habitats.

Curriculum outcome: Life Science: Habitats · structural and behavioural adaptations of animals and plants in different habitats

  6. Unit 6

    Light

Natural and artificial light, things that make light and things that reflect it, shadows, transparent, translucent and opaque materials, mirrors, refraction, and how light technology affects people and wildlife.

Curriculum outcome: Physical Science: Light · light sources, shadows, reflection, refraction and how light travels

  7. Unit 7

    Sound

Vibrations and sound waves, pitch and volume, how sound travels through different materials but not through empty space, echoes and absorbing sound, how we hear, and how noise and sound devices affect people and animals.

Curriculum outcome: Physical Science: Sound · vibrations, pitch, loudness, echoes and how we hear

  8. Unit 8

    Wind, Water, Ice

Children learn how wind, water and ice change the landscape, how soil forms from rocks, and which natural events cause sudden changes.

Curriculum outcome: Space and Earth Science: Rocks, Minerals, and Erosion · weathering and erosion by wind, water and ice, soil formation and sudden landscape changes

  9. Unit 9

    Rocks vs. Minerals

Children tell rocks from minerals, describe and classify them by their properties, and link their properties to how people use them.

Curriculum outcome: Space and Earth Science: Rocks, Minerals, and Erosion · telling rocks from minerals, classifying them by properties and how they are used

  10. Unit 10

    Think Like a Scientist

Practises measuring tools and units, safe use of equipment, fair tests, hypotheses, collecting data and drawing conclusions from evidence.

Curriculum outcome: GCO 2 · measuring, predicting, testing and working safely in science
