Sun, Moon & Weather Records

The Sun is a star, the Moon reflects light, and we measure weather.

What your child practices

Practices that the Sun is a star giving light and heat, that the Moon shines with reflected sunlight, how telescopes and binoculars show more of the sky, and measuring and graphing temperature and rainfall.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 2.9(A); 2.9(B); 2.10(B) · the Sun as a star, moonlight as reflected sunlight, tools for viewing the sky, and measuring weather

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. The Sun is a star. It gives us light and heat.
  2. The Moon shines with reflected sunlight.
  3. Measure weather and graph it: the tallest bar shows the most.

Example: Monday had 2 inches of rain. Tuesday had 1 inch. Which day was wetter? 2 inches is more than 1 inch. Answer: Monday
