Hundreds, tens and ones
What your child practices
Adding and subtracting three-digit numbers using place value, and adding or taking away 10 or 100 in their head.
Washington State Learning Standards learning standard: M.2.Q.NBT.7; M.2.Q.NBT.8 · adding and subtracting within 1000 using place value, and mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Add the hundreds, then the tens, then the ones.
- Regroup 10 ones as a ten, or 10 tens as a hundred.
- 10 more or 100 more changes just one digit.
Example: What is 345 + 132? 300 + 100 = 400. 40 + 30 = 70. 5 + 2 = 7. 400 + 70 + 7 = 477. Answer: 477
