Coordinate Grid

Plot points (x, y)

What your child practices

Naming and plotting points in the first quadrant of the coordinate grid, and reading what a point means in a real situation.

Washington State Learning Standards learning standard: M.5.SR.G.1; M.5.SR.G.2 · using a coordinate grid to name and graph points in the first quadrant, and interpreting points in context

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A point is written (x, y).
  2. Start at (0, 0). Go right x units, then up y units.
  3. Points on the x-axis have y = 0.

Example: Start at (0, 0). Go 4 right and 2 up. Where are you? x = 4, y = 2. Answer: (4, 2)
