Percents & Proportions
Increase, decrease and proportional
What your child practices
Knowing common fraction, decimal and percent equivalents, increasing and decreasing numbers by 1%, 5%, 10%, 25%, 50% and 100%, and deciding whether a relationship is proportional.
Washington State Learning Standards learning standard: M.7.R.RP.2; M.7.R.RP.3 · proportional relationships and percent increase and decrease
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Know common matches: 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%, 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%.
- To increase by a percent, multiply by 1 plus the percent as a decimal.
- A proportion says two ratios are equal.
Example: Increase 80 by 25%. 25% of 80 = 20. 80 + 20 = 100. Answer: 100

Question 1
Which fraction is equal to 70%?
- 7/10
- 1/5
- 3/4
7/10
Hint: Write the percent as a fraction out of 100, then simplify.
Question 2
Decrease 40 by 10%. What is the new number?
answer box
36
Hint: Find 10% of 40, then take it from 40.
Question 3
Ravi earns $12 for every hour he works. Is his pay proportional to the hours he works?
- No, pay goes up by different amounts
- Yes, doubling the hours doubles the pay
- No, pay is the same every hour
Yes, doubling the hours doubles the pay
Hint: In a proportional relationship, doubling one amount doubles the other, and the ratio stays the same.
Question 4
Decrease 260 by 5%. What is the new number?
answer box
247
Hint: Find 5% of 260, then take it from 260.
Question 5
