Centimetres and metres

What your child practises

Measuring with a ruler from zero and choosing between centimetres and metres.

Yukon Curriculum learning standard: Direct linear measurement, using standard units (centimetres, metres)

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Centimetres (cm) measure short lengths.
  2. Metres (m) measure long lengths.
  3. Line up the 0 on the ruler with one end.

Example: Would you measure a pencil in cm or m? A pencil is short. Short things use centimetres. Answer: cm
