Grade 8 Science: how to help at home
What your child learns in Grade 8 science in the BC Curriculum, and simple things to try at home.
The Big Ideas this year
- Life processes are performed at the cellular level.
- The behaviour of matter can be explained by the kinetic molecular theory and by the atomic theory.
- Energy can be transferred as both a particle and a wave.
- The theory of plate tectonics is the unifying theory that explains Earth’s geological processes.
Easy ways to practise science at home
- Turn everyday questions into investigations: “Which paper towel holds the most water?”
- Read a science news story together and ask what evidence it gives.
- Look up how a household machine works, such as a bike gear, a lamp or a fridge.
- Have your child draw and label a diagram of something they just learned.
What each unit covers
Cells & Life Processes
The cell theory, what organelles do in plant and animal cells, how photosynthesis and respiration are connected, osmosis, and how cells form tissues, organs and organ systems.
Microbes & the Immune System
What makes something alive, helpful and harmful micro-organisms, how the immune system defends the body, how vaccines and antibiotics work, and the impact of epidemics and pandemics.
Particles & Matter
How the movement of particles explains solids, liquids and gases and changes of state, the parts of an atom (including the quarks inside protons and neutrons, and electrons as leptons), elements and compounds, and telling physical from chemical changes.
Light & Radiation
Wavelength and frequency, the electromagnetic spectrum from radio waves to gamma rays and what each is used for, reflection, refraction and colour, and staying safe from UV radiation.
Plate Tectonics
Earth's layers and moving plates, the three kinds of plate boundaries, the evidence for continental drift and sea-floor spreading, and earthquake and tsunami safety on the BC coast.
What the report card levels look like at home
- Emerging
- Just getting started with this idea. Short, regular practice with lots of support helps most.
- Developing
- Understands parts of it and is building confidence. Keep practising the tricky parts.
- Proficient
- Has it! Mixed review now and then keeps it strong.
- Extending
- Applies it confidently, even in new or harder situations. Try challenge mode and real-life problems.

Common questions
How can I help my Grade 8 child with science?
Turn everyday questions into investigations: “Which paper towel holds the most water?” Read a science news story together and ask what evidence it gives. Keep sessions short, about 10 to 15 minutes, and stop on a success.
What does my child learn in Grade 8 science in BC?
The BC Curriculum Grade 8 science units include cells & life processes, microbes & the immune system, particles & matter, light & radiation, plate tectonics.
