What your child learns in Grade 9 in New Brunswick

Grade 9 is the start of the high school block. Students work with powers, rational numbers, polynomials and linear relations, and in science they bring together ideas from earlier grades (ecosystems, matter, cells and the universe). Social Studies 9 explores Canadian identities, governance and rights.

Math

Big Ideas

  • Number: Number Sense. Describe numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems.
  • Number: Operations. Apply the order of operations, including exponents.
  • Statistics and Probability: Data Analysis. Compare and critique the presentation of data.

7 units, including exponents & powers, rational numbers, linear relations, multi-step equations.

English Language Arts

Big Ideas

  • Interactions: Expression. Construct and communicate personal strengths and an awareness of self, others, and the world including awareness of digital and AI-influenced environments.
  • Interactions: Exchanges. Seek and provide clarification and explanation of ideas and concepts, problems, and solutions.
  • Interactions: Reception. Critically reflect on the contributions of others and extend my understanding.

11 units, including word detective, forms & features, close reading, literary elements.

Science

Big Ideas

  • Grade focus: Synthesis of the Grades 3 to 8 science topics: Earth and its place in the universe; ecosystems; molecules to organisms; biological evolution.
  • Scientific Literacy: Investigation. Plan investigations to answer questions about relationships between and among variables observed in the solar system, ecosystems, and molecules and organisms.
  • Scientific Literacy: Sensemaking. Analyze and interpret qualitative and quantitative data to construct explanations and conclusions.

11 units, including reproduction, cells from cells, atoms & electrons, inside the atom.

Social Studies

Big Ideas

  • Geography: Places and Regions. Investigate basic features of Canada’s landscape and climate.
  • Geography: Human Systems and Interactions. Analyze the effect of human settlement on place over time.
  • History: Events and Peoples. Analyze various perceptions of identities in Canada.

French Immersion

Big Ideas

  • Intercultural competencies: Intercultural awareness. Develop an awareness of and reflect on the role of languages and cultures in shaping identity.

  • Intercultural competencies: Intercultural skills. Apply intercultural skills and positive attitudes towards cultures and languages.

9 units, including registres et exposés oraux, la fable, le roman et ses personnages, les figures de style.

Core French

Big Ideas

What to look for on the report card

Look for comments on planning ahead for course choices, explaining reasoning in math and weighing perspectives in social studies and English. Grade 9 courses receive a numerical grade.
