Addition facts to 20

Grade 2 and up

The 100 facts from 1 + 1 to 10 + 10 cover every sum up to 20. Doubles, near doubles and making a ten take most of the work out of them.

How to learn them

  1. Doubles are quick: 6 + 6 is 12.
  2. Near doubles: 6 + 7 is a double plus 1.
  3. Make a ten: 9 + 5 is the same as 10 + 4.

Example: 8 + 5 = ? 8 needs 2 more to make 10. Take 2 from the 5. That leaves 3. 10 + 3 is 13. Answer: 13.

Questions parents ask

What is the fastest way to learn addition facts to 20?
Learn the doubles first, then use them for near doubles (6 + 7 is 6 + 6 plus 1), then practise making a ten (9 + 5 is 10 + 4). A few facts a day beats a long session.
How many addition facts are there?
There are 100 facts when both numbers run from 1 to 10. Because 3 + 8 and 8 + 3 have the same answer, a child really learns far fewer than 100 separate ideas.

More sets: all math facts practice. Math facts practice is not a report-card mark; it shows what a child knows by heart.
