Grade 3 Matter & Particles worksheet
from Gradelings · Name: ______________________
How to explain it
- All matter is made of tiny particles.
- Solid: packed tightly, wiggling in place. Liquid: close but sliding past. Gas: far apart and moving fast.
- Heating causes melting and evaporation. Cooling causes freezing and condensation.
Example: Liquid water turns into a gas. What is that called? Heat makes the particles move faster and spread out. Liquid to gas is evaporation. Answer: evaporation
Question 1
An ice cube sits in the hot sun. Put what happens in order.
- ☀️the puddle evaporates into the air
- 💧it melts into a puddle
- 🧊a solid ice cube
a solid ice cube → it melts into a puddle → the puddle evaporates into the air
Hint: Heat melts the solid ice into liquid water. More heat makes the water evaporate into the air.
Question 2
Solid, liquid or gas? Tap an item, then tap its basket.
Sort into: 🧱 solid · 💧 liquid · 💨 gas
- ✏️pencil
- 🪨rock
- 🥤bubbles in fizzy water
- 🍯honey
- 🌬️the air we breathe
- 🥛milk
🧱 solid: pencil, rock · 💧 liquid: honey, milk · 💨 gas: bubbles in fizzy water, the air we breathe
Hint: A solid keeps its shape. A liquid flows and takes the shape of its container. A gas spreads out to fill any space.
Question 3
When a gas cools and turns into a liquid, it is called…
💧- condensation
- melting
- evaporation
condensation
Hint: Condensation is the opposite of evaporation. Gas becomes liquid when it cools.
Question 4
Heating makes particles move…
🔥- slower
- not at all
- faster
faster
Hint: Adding heat gives particles more energy, so they move faster.
Question 5
Can you see the particles in a rock with just your eyes?
🪨- Yes, if you look very closely
- Yes, they are as big as marbles
- No, they are much too small
No, they are much too small
Hint: Particles are so tiny that millions of them would fit on the tip of a pencil.
Question 6
A cold glass of water gets wet on the outside on a hot day. Why?
🥛- the glass is melting
- water vapour in the air cools and turns into drops
- water leaks through the glass
water vapour in the air cools and turns into drops
Hint: Water vapour in the air touches the cold glass, cools down and becomes liquid. That's condensation.
Question 7
Which one keeps its own shape?
- 🌬️air
- 🥛milk
- 🪵a wooden block
🪵 a wooden block
Hint: Solids keep their shape. Liquids and gases change shape to fit their container.
Question 8
In a gas, the particles are…
💨- stuck together in one spot
- far apart and moving fast
- packed tightly in rows
far apart and moving fast
Hint: Gas particles zoom around and spread out to fill whatever space they are in.
Question 9
When liquid water gets cold enough to turn into ice, it is called…
❄️- melting
- boiling
- freezing
freezing
Hint: Cooling slows the particles down until they lock in place. The water freezes.
Question 10
When a solid is heated and turns into a liquid, it is called…
🍦- melting
- condensing
- freezing
melting
Hint: Heat makes a solid melt. Think of an ice cube turning into water.
