Grade 6 Mixtures & Solutions worksheet
from Gradelings · Name: ______________________
How to explain it
- A pure substance is one kind of matter, like gold or table salt. A mixture has two or more, like salt water or air.
- In a solution, one thing dissolves into another, like sugar in water.
- Separate mixtures by sifting, filtering, magnets or letting water evaporate.
- Sugar dissolves faster in warmer water.
Example: How could you get iron filings out of sand? Magnets pull iron, but not sand. Move a magnet through the mixture. Answer: use a magnet
Question 1
Water is sometimes called the “universal solvent” because…
- it can dissolve more substances than almost any other liquid
- it never mixes with anything
- it is found everywhere in space
- it dissolves every substance
it can dissolve more substances than almost any other liquid
Hint: Water dissolves many things, like salt and sugar, but not everything. Oil and sand don't dissolve in water.
Question 2
Recycling plants use giant magnets. What do the magnets pull out?
♻️- glass jars
- steel cans
- plastic bottles
- cardboard boxes
steel cans
Hint: Steel contains iron, which is magnetic.
Question 3
Which change makes sugar dissolve faster?
🥄- using bigger sugar lumps
- stirring the water
- putting a lid on the cup
- using colder water
stirring the water
Hint: Stirring, warmer water and smaller pieces all help a solute dissolve faster.
Question 4
What can Priya conclude from her experiment?
Seconds for a sugar cube to dissolve - Water temperature makes no difference
- Sugar can't dissolve in hot water
- Sugar dissolves faster in colder water
- Sugar dissolves faster in warmer water
Sugar dissolves faster in warmer water
Hint: Look at how the bars change as the water gets warmer. A shorter bar means less time to dissolve.
Question 5
Which cup of sugar water is the most concentrated?
Sugar water cups Cup Sugar Water A 3 g 100 mL B 10 g 200 mL C 2 g 100 mL D 6 g 100 mL - Cup C
- Cup B
- Cup A
- Cup D
Cup D
Hint: Concentration is how much solute is dissolved in an amount of solvent. Work out the grams of sugar in each 100 mL of water, then compare.
Question 6
What is a pure substance?
- any liquid you can see through
- matter made of only one kind of particle
- anything found in nature
- two substances stirred together
matter made of only one kind of particle
Hint: Distilled water, table salt and gold are pure substances. Each is made of just one kind of particle.
Question 7
Mechanical mixture or solution? Tap an item, then tap its basket.
Sort into: 🥣 mechanical mixture · 🧪 solution
- 🌬️air
- 🥗salad
- 🍪chocolate chip cookie
- 🎺brass (copper and zinc)
- 🥜trail mix
- 🧂salt dissolved in water
🥣 mechanical mixture: salad, chocolate chip cookie, trail mix · 🧪 solution: air, brass (copper and zinc), salt dissolved in water
Hint: In a mechanical mixture you can see the different parts. In a solution, one substance dissolves into another, so it looks the same all the way through.
Question 8
In salt water, which is the solvent?
🧪- salt water
- salt
- water
water
Hint: The solute is what dissolves (usually the smaller amount). The solvent does the dissolving (usually the larger amount). Together they make the solution.
Question 9
Which of these is a solution?
- sand and gravel
- a tossed salad
- sugar dissolved in water
- a bowl of cereal and milk
sugar dissolved in water
Hint: In a solution, one substance dissolves into another and looks the same throughout.
Question 10
In a mechanical mixture, you can…
🥜- only find liquids
- never separate the parts
- see the different parts
- see just one uniform substance
see the different parts
Hint: Think of trail mix: you can see the nuts, raisins and seeds.
Answer key
- 1. it can dissolve more substances than almost any other liquid
- 2. steel cans
- 3. stirring the water
- 4. Sugar dissolves faster in warmer water
- 5. Cup D
- 6. matter made of only one kind of particle
- 7. 🥣 mechanical mixture: salad, chocolate chip cookie, trail mix · 🧪 solution: air, brass (copper and zinc), salt dissolved in water
- 8. water
- 9. sugar dissolved in water
- 10. see the different parts
