Changing Land

Fast and slow changes to the land, and ways to stop wind and water wearing it away.

What your child practices

Your child sorts changes to the land into fast and slow, and looks at ways people keep soil and shorelines from washing away.

Alabama Course of Study content standard: 2.10; 2.11 · fast and slow changes to the land, and ways to stop wind and water wearing it away

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Fast changes happen in minutes or days, like a landslide.
  2. Slow changes take years, like a canyon forming.
  3. Beach grass holds sand dunes. Rock walls stop waves wearing away land.

Example: What helps keep sand dunes from blowing away? Roots hold sand in place. Answer: planting beach grass
