Energy Resources

Renewable and nonrenewable energy and how using it affects the environment.

What your child practices

Your child sorts energy resources as renewable or nonrenewable and describes how using each affects the environment, with Alabama examples such as coal and river dams.

Alabama Course of Study content standard: 4.14 · how using renewable and nonrenewable energy resources affects the environment

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Renewable resources, like sunlight, wind and moving water, won't run out.
  2. Fossil fuels formed from ancient plants and animals, and will run out.
  3. Energy from moving water is hydropower. Dams can block fish like salmon.
  4. Solar panels on a roof let a home make its own electricity.

Example: What is energy from moving water called? “Hydro” means water. Answer: hydropower

Energy Resources in Alabama

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
