How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. After the French and Indian War, Britain taxed the colonies, and colonists protested.
  2. The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Loyalists stayed loyal to Britain.
  3. Spain captured Mobile from Britain during the war. Treaties set the new nation’s borders.

Example: Colonists who stayed loyal to Britain were called what? Patriots wanted independence. Those loyal to Britain had a name from “loyal.” Answer: Loyalists
