Living Things

Living or not? Plant or animal?

What your child practices

Sorting living and non-living things, telling plants from animals, and what living things need to grow.

Alabama Course of Study content standard: K.3 · sorting living and nonliving things by what they can do

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Living things grow and need air, food and water.
  2. A ball or a rock is not living.
  3. Plants use sunlight to make their own food.

Example: Is a cat living or not living? A cat eats, drinks and grows. Answer: living

Living Things in Alabama

In the Alabama Course of Study, this is unit 4 of 13 in Kindergarten Science, after What Living Things Need and before What Living Things Need.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
