Natural or Made

What is in our environment?

What your child practices

On a walk, point out natural things (trees, rocks, water) and things people made (benches, roads). Ask your child to wonder about what they see.

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Natural things are trees, rocks, water and meadows.
  2. People made things like benches, roads and schools.
  3. Treat nature with respect when you visit.

Example: Which one did people make: a rock or a bench? A rock comes from nature. People build benches. Answer: a bench

Natural or Made in Alabama

In the Alabama Course of Study, this is unit 7 of 13 in Kindergarten Science, after From Seed to Plant and before Where Animals Live.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
