Families

Every family is special

What your child practices

Seeing that families come in many shapes and sizes, growing up from baby to grandparent, family stories and traditions, and helping at home.

Alabama Course of Study content standard: K.3 · family customs and celebrations

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Every family is special. Families can look different.
  2. Families help each other at home.
  3. A tradition is something a family does again and again.

Example: Your family has pancakes every Sunday. What is that? You do it again and again. That makes it a family tradition. Answer: a tradition

Families in Alabama

In the Alabama Course of Study, this is unit 3 of 13 in Kindergarten Social Studies, after Good Citizens and before Symbols & Holidays.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
