Numbers to a Million
Read, write and compare big numbers
What your child practices
Place value to 1,000,000: digit values, standard and expanded form, number words, rounding, ordering, and using benchmarks like 500,000 on a number line.
Alaska content standards learning standard: 5.NBT.1 · place value in multi-digit numbers
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right.
- Read big numbers in groups of three digits: thousands, then ones.
- To compare, start at the left-most place and look for the first difference.
Example: Write four hundred twelve thousand, three hundred five in digits. Thousands group: 412. Ones group: 305. Put them together: 412,305. Answer: 412,305

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
Round 409,256 to the nearest ten thousand.
- 400,000
- 390,000
- 410,000
- 409,000
410,000
Hint: Look at the digit just to the right of the ten thousands place. If it is 5 or more, round up; if it is less than 5, round down. Then every place to the right becomes 0.
Question 2
What number is 10,000 less than 801,140?
answer box
791140
Hint: Only the ten thousands digit should change by 1. If that digit is 0, regroup with the place to its left.
Question 3
What number belongs in the box on the number line?
answer box
700000
Hint: The line is split into 10 equal jumps from 0 to 1,000 000, so each jump is 100,000. Count the jumps to the box.
Question 4
Put these numbers in order from least to greatest.
- 491,810
- 491,180
- 491,108
- 419,180
419,180 → 491,108 → 491,180 → 491,810
Hint: Compare the greatest place first. If those digits match, move one place to the right, and keep going until the digits are different.
Question 5
Write this number using digits: one hundred fifty-six thousand three hundred seventy-four.
answer box
156374
Hint: Split the number at the word “thousand”. Write the thousands part, then the last three digits. Use a 0 to hold any empty place.
Question 6
What number is 400,000 + 8000 + 10 + 3?
answer box
408013
Hint: Each part fills one place value. Write the digits from the greatest place to the ones, and put a 0 in any place that is missing.
