Coordinate Grid
Plot points (x, y)
What your child practices
Naming and plotting points in the first quadrant of the coordinate grid, and reading what a point means in a real situation.
Alaska content standards learning standard: 5.G.1; 5.G.2 · graphing and naming points in the first quadrant, and interpreting points in context
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- A point is written (x, y).
- Start at (0, 0). Go right x units, then up y units.
- Points on the x-axis have y = 0.
Example: Start at (0, 0). Go 4 right and 2 up. Where are you? x = 4, y = 2. Answer: (4, 2)
Coordinate Grid in Alaska
In the Alaska content standards, this is unit 11 of 14 in 5th grade Math, after Parentheses & Expressions and before Multiply & Divide Fractions.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
A plant grows 4 cm each week. On a graph, x is weeks and y is height. Which point shows week 2?
- (8, 2)
- (2, 8)
- (4, 2)
- (2, 6)
(2, 8)
Hint: After 2 weeks the plant is 2 × 4 = 8 cm. x first, then y.
Question 2
Which point is on the y-axis?
- (5, 0)
- (0, 5)
- (5, 5)
- (3, 2)
(0, 5)
Hint: Points on the y-axis have an x-coordinate of 0.
Question 3
What are the coordinates of point A?
- (5, 4)
- (4, 3)
- (3, 5)
- (5, 3)
(5, 3)
Hint: Go across first (x), then up (y).
Question 4
Point A is at (9, 6) and point B is at (9, 9). How many units apart are they?
- 3
- 15
- 2
- 9
3
Hint: The points line up, so subtract the numbers that change.
Question 5
Start at (0, 0). Go 6 units right and 2 units up. Where are you?
- (8, 0)
- (6, 2)
- (2, 6)
- (6, 6)
(6, 2)
Hint: The first number is how far right. The second is how far up.
Question 6
A plant grows 3 cm each week. On a graph, x is weeks and y is height. Which point shows week 2?
- (2, 6)
- (2, 5)
- (6, 2)
- (3, 2)
(2, 6)
Hint: After 2 weeks the plant is 2 × 3 = 6 cm. x first, then y.
