Pythagorean Theorem
Right triangles and a² + b² = c²
What your child practices
Finding a missing side of a right triangle, checking whether a triangle is a right triangle, and using the theorem for ladders and diagonals.
Alaska content standards learning standard: 8.G.6; 8.G.7 · the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse in problems in context
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- It works for right triangles only.
- The two shorter sides (legs) are a and b. The longest side, across from the right angle, is c.
- a² + b² = c².
Example: A right triangle has legs 6 cm and 8 cm. How long is the longest side? 6² + 8² = 36 + 64 = 100. c = √100 = 10. Answer: 10 cm
Pythagorean Theorem in Alaska
In the Alaska content standards, this is unit 3 of 17 in 8th grade Math, after Patterns & Two-Step Equations and before Surface Area & Volume.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
A right triangle has legs of 3 cm and 4 cm. How long is the hypotenuse?
answer boxcm
5 cm
Hint: c² = a² + b² = 9 + 16 = 25, so c = √25 = 5 cm.
Question 2
The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 26 cm and one leg is 24 cm. How long is the other leg?
answer boxcm
10 cm
Hint: b² = c² − a² = 676 − 576 = 100, so b = √100 = 10 cm.
Question 3
A triangle has sides 15 cm, 36 cm and 39 cm. Is it a right triangle?
- No
- Yes
Yes
Hint: Check whether 15² + 36² = 39²: 225 + 1296 = 1521, and 39² = 1521. They match.
Question 4
A ladder leans against a wall. Its foot is 20 m from the wall and it reaches 48 m up the wall. How long is the ladder?
answer boxm
52 m
Hint: The wall, ground and ladder make a right triangle. c² = 20² + 48² = 2704, so c = 52 m.
Question 5
A rectangular field is 7 m by 24 m. How long is the diagonal across the field?
answer boxm
25 m
Hint: The diagonal is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with legs 7 m and 24 m: √(49 + 576) = √625 = 25 m.
Question 6
The legs of a right triangle are 8 cm and 3 cm. What is the hypotenuse, rounded to 1 decimal place?
- 8.6 cm
- 7.4 cm
- 8.5 cm
- 11.0 cm
8.5 cm
Hint: c² = 8² + 3² = 73. √73 ≈ 8.5.
