Where Animals Live

Animals live where they can get what they need.

What your child practices

Practices matching plants and animals to places that meet their needs, and noticing how animals and people change their surroundings to get what they need.

Alaska content standards learning standard: K-ESS3-1; K-ESS2-2 · living things live where their needs are met, and they change the places they live

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Animals live where they find food, water and a home.
  2. Frogs live near ponds. Squirrels live near trees.
  3. People change places too, like planting a garden.

Example: Where does a fish live? A fish needs water to swim. It lives in a lake or stream. Answer: in water

Where Animals Live in Alaska

In the Alaska content standards, this is unit 7 of 8 in Kindergarten Science, after Stormy Weather and before Make It Work.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
