Our Land

Nature, buildings and caring

What your child practices

Natural and human-made features, how the land shapes how we live, and caring for it by reducing, reusing and recycling.

Arizona Academic Standards learning standard: 1.G2.1; 1.G3.2 · how people use and change the land, now and in the past

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Natural things come from nature: trees, oceans, flowers.
  2. People make things like houses, roads and schools.
  3. We help nature when we recycle and pick up litter.

Example: Where should an empty plastic bottle go? Plastic bottles can be made into new things. So they go in the recycling bin. Answer: recycling bin

Our Land in Arizona

In the Arizona Academic Standards, this is unit 2 of 9 in 1st grade Social Studies, after Maps and before My Community.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
