Telling Time

Analog, digital and 24-hour clocks

What your child practises

Reading analog clocks to the minute, switching between 12-hour (a.m./p.m.) and 24-hour time, and working out how long events last.

BC Curriculum learning standard: How to tell time with analog and digital clocks, using 12- and 24-hour clocks

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. An analog clock has hands. A digital clock shows numbers.
  2. A 24-hour clock counts the whole day: 13:00 is 1 p.m.
  3. For p.m. times after 12, add 12 to the hour.

Example: Write 3:45 p.m. on a 24-hour clock. It is p.m., so add 12 to the hour. 3 + 12 = 15. Answer: 15:45

Sample questions

A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.

  1. Question 1

It is evening. What time does the clock show in 24-hour time?

    123456789101112
    • 22:45
    • 19:45
    • 09:45
    • 21:45
    Show answer

    21:45

Hint: First read the clock: 9:45. In the evening, add 12 to the hour: 9 + 12 = 21.

  2. Question 2

    45 min

Hint: First count to the next hour: 6:50 to 7:00 is 10 minutes. Then add the minutes after that.

  3. Question 3

What time does the clock show?

    123456789101112
    • 4:55
    • 5:55
    • 4:11
    • 11:20
    Show answer

    4:55

Hint: The short red hand shows the hour. The long blue hand shows the minutes: each number on the clock is 5 more minutes. The hour hand is past the 4 but not yet at the 5, so the hour is still 4.

  4. Question 4

What time does the clock show?

    123456789101112
    • 11:10
    • 10:55
    • 12:50
    • 11:50
    Show answer

    11:50

Hint: The short red hand shows the hour. The long blue hand shows the minutes: each number on the clock is 5 more minutes. The hour hand is past the 11 but not yet at the 12, so the hour is still 11.

  5. Question 5

    What is 4:10 a.m. in 24-hour time?

    • 04:10
    • 02:10
    Show answer

    04:10

Hint: For p.m. times from 1 p.m. on, add 12 to the hour. a.m. times keep their hour. 12 noon is 12:00, and midnight is 00:00.

  6. Question 6

What is 18:45 in 12-hour time?

    18:4524-hour clock
    • 6:45 p.m.
    • 4:45 p.m.
    • 8:45 p.m.
    • 6:45 a.m.
    Show answer

    6:45 p.m.

    Hint: In 24-hour time, 00:00 to 11:59 is a.m. and 12:00 to 23:59 is p.m. For hours 13 to 23, subtract 12 from the hour. 00 is midnight, so 00:15 is 12:15 a.m.
