Multiply and divide facts

What your child practises

Multiplication and division facts to 100 with arrays, fact families and strategies like doubling, using 10s, and thinking multiplication to divide.

BC Curriculum learning standard: Multiplication and division facts to 100 (introductory computational strategies)

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Use facts you know to find the ones you don't.
  2. Split a number into easy parts.
  3. Division is the opposite of multiplication.

Example: 7 × 8 = ? 5 × 8 = 40. 2 × 8 = 16. 40 + 16 = 56. Answer: 56

Sample questions

A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.

  1. Question 1

Which fact is in the same fact family as 8 × 7 = 56?

    • 56 ÷ 7 = 7
    • 56 ÷ 8 = 7
    • 56 − 8 = 48
    • 8 + 7 = 15
    Show answer

    56 ÷ 8 = 7

    Hint: A fact family uses the same three numbers: 8, 7 and 56. Division undoes multiplication, so 56 ÷ 8 = 7.

  2. Question 2

    What is 9 × 4?

    9 × 4 = ?

    • 36
    • 32
    • 40
    • 45
    Show answer

    36

    Hint: Use 10s: 10 × 4 = 40, then take away one 4. So 9 × 4 = 36.

  3. Question 3

63 cookies are shared equally among 7 friends. How many cookies does each friend get?

    🍪
    • 9
    • 11
    • 8
    • 10
    Show answer

    9

    Hint: Divide: 63 ÷ 7. Think: 7 × what number = 63? 7 × 9 = 63.

  4. Question 4

How many 🐞 are in this array?

    • 42
    • 49
    • 35
    • 48
    Show answer

    42

    Hint: There are 6 rows with 7 in each row. 6 × 7 = 42.

  5. Question 5

What number goes in the box?

    5 × = 15

    • 5
    • 3
    • 4
    • 2
    Show answer

    3

    Hint: Think division: 15 ÷ 5 = 3. Check: 5 × 3 = 15.

  6. Question 6

    What is 4 × 9?

    4 × 9 = ?

    answer box

    Show answer

    36

    Hint: Use 10s: 10 × 4 = 40, then take away one 4.
