Units
Unit 1
Numbers to 10,000
Reading, writing and comparing numbers up to 10,000: place value, expanded form, number lines, ordering and rounding.
Learning standard: 4.NBT.1; 4.NBT.2; 4.NBT.3 · reading, comparing and rounding multi-digit whole numbers with place value
Unit 2
Add & Subtract
Adding and subtracting numbers to 10,000 with regrouping, counting up to subtract, estimating by rounding, and solving word problems.
Learning standard: 4.NBT.4 · fluently adding and subtracting multi-digit whole numbers
Unit 3
Multiply & Divide
Multiplying and dividing 2- and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers by splitting them by place value, plus remainders, estimating and word problems.
Learning standard: 4.NBT.5; 4.NBT.6 · multiplying by one digit and dividing with remainders
Unit 4
Fractions
Naming fractions from pictures and number lines, comparing fractions with the same top or bottom number, using 1/2 as a benchmark, and finding equal fractions.
Learning standard: 4.NF.1; 4.NF.2 · equivalent fractions and comparing fractions
Unit 5
Decimals
Tenths and hundredths as decimals, linking them to fractions, placing and comparing them on number lines, and adding and subtracting decimals by lining up the decimal points.
Learning standard: 4.NF.6; 4.NF.7 · decimal notation for tenths and hundredths, and comparing decimals
Unit 6
Patterns & Tables
Extending increasing and decreasing number patterns, naming pattern rules, finding rules in input/output tables, and describing how two quantities are related.
Learning standard: 4.OA.5 · analyzing number patterns that follow a given rule
Unit 7
Equations
Solving one-step equations with a box or letter for the unknown, using all four operations, and matching equations to word problems.
Learning standard: 4.OA.3 · solving multistep problems with a letter for the unknown
Unit 8
Polygons & Perimeter
Telling regular polygons (all sides and angles equal) from irregular ones, finding lines of symmetry, and measuring perimeter around regular and irregular shapes.
Learning standard: 4.G.2; 4.G.3; 4.MD.3 · classifying shapes, lines of symmetry, and perimeter
Unit 9
Fractions
Reading and naming fractions from halves to tenths, counting by fractions, comparing them, and seeing 3 × 1/4 as three fourths.
Learning standard: 4.NF.3; 4.NF.4 · building fractions from unit fractions and multiplying a fraction by a whole number
Unit 10
Angles & Area
Sorting angles into acute, right, obtuse and straight, finding area by multiplying length by width, and working backward to find a side.
Learning standard: 4.MD.5; 4.G.1; 4.MD.3 · lines and angles, acute, right and obtuse angles, and the area formula for rectangles
Unit 11
Metric Measures
Changing between grams and kilograms and between liters and milliliters, understanding kilo, centi and milli, and choosing a sensible unit and tool.
Learning standard: 4.MD.1 · relative sizes of metric units of mass and capacity
Unit 12
Prime & Composite
A prime number has exactly two factors, 1 and itself (like 7). A composite number has more than two (like 12). 1 is neither. Children find factors with multiplication and division facts.
Learning standard: 4.OA.4 · finding factor pairs and telling prime from composite numbers
Unit 13
Feet, Pounds & Gallons
Knowing how US customary units compare (12 inches in a foot, 16 ounces in a pound, 4 quarts in a gallon) as well as metric and time units, and converting a larger unit to a smaller one.
Learning standard: 4.MD.1; 4.MD.2 · knowing the relative sizes of measurement units, converting larger units to smaller ones, and solving measurement problems
Unit 14
Line Plots & Data
Reading tables of measurements in halves, fourths and eighths of an inch, finding differences, comparing two classes, and choosing questions that need data.
Learning standard: 4.MD.4 · making and reading line plots of measurements in fractions of a unit
Unit 15
Times as Many
Multiplicative comparison: reading 35 = 5 × 7 as “35 is 5 times as many as 7”, and solving “times as many” problems, which are different from “more than” problems.
Learning standard: 4.OA.1; 4.OA.2 · interpreting multiplication as a comparison and solving times-as-many problems
