California Content Standards learning standard: 4.NF.3; 4.NF.4 · building fractions from unit fractions and multiplying a fraction by a whole number

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Count by fractions like counting by 1s: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4.
  2. The bottom number tells the size of the parts.
  3. Repeated addition is multiplication: 3 groups of 2/5.

Example: Count by fourths: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, what comes next? The top number grows by 1. 4/4 is one whole. Answer: 4/4
