Focus areas

Units

  1. Unit 1

    Count to 10

Counting objects one at a time, matching numbers to amounts, counting on and back, putting numbers in order, and knowing that nothing is zero.

Learning standard: K.CC.4; K.CC.5 · connecting counting to how many, and counting to answer how-many questions

  2. Unit 2

    Make 5 and 10

Using 5 and 10 as anchors (fingers, five and ten frames), finding how many more make 5 or 10, and breaking numbers into two parts.

Learning standard: K.OA.3; K.OA.4 · breaking numbers to 10 into pairs, and finding the number that makes 10

  3. Unit 3

    Add & Take Away

Small story problems where some join or some leave (totals to 10), plus finding one more and one less.

Learning standard: K.OA.1; K.OA.2; K.OA.5 · showing and solving addition and subtraction stories within 10, and adding and subtracting within 5

  4. Unit 4

    More, Less, Same

Comparing groups by matching them one to one, seeing equal as balanced and unequal as unbalanced on a scale, and reading simple picture graphs.

Learning standard: K.CC.6; K.CC.7 · telling whether one group is greater than, less than or equal to another, and comparing numbers to 10

  5. Unit 5

    Shapes & Sizes

Naming flat shapes and solid objects by one feature (sides, corners, rolls or not), and comparing things by size, height, length, weight and how much they hold.

Learning standard: K.G.2; K.G.3; K.MD.2 · naming flat and solid shapes, and comparing objects by length and weight

  6. Unit 6

    Numbers to 20

Counting to 20 forward and back from any number, recognizing small groups at a glance, and comparing two numbers.

Learning standard: K.CC.2; K.CC.3; K.CC.5 · counting forward from a given number and representing up to 20 objects with a written number

  7. Unit 7

    See It Fast

Subitizing means knowing how many are in a small group without counting. Practice with dice, dominoes and fingers: show a number and ask how many.

Learning standard: K.CC.4; K.CC.5 · connecting numbers to quantities and answering how-many questions about small groups

  8. Unit 8

    Build with Blocks

Practices naming and describing 3-D objects (sphere, cube, cylinder, cone) by how they look and move, and choosing blocks to build with. At home, build a tower and talk about which block goes where and why.

Learning standard: K.G.1; K.G.4 · describing objects in the world with the names of shapes and comparing solid shapes

  9. Unit 9

    Count to 100

Counting to 100 by ones and by tens, counting on from any number, and seeing 11 to 19 as ten and some more ones.

Learning standard: K.CC.1; K.CC.2; K.NBT.1 · counting to 100 by ones and tens, counting on from a given number, and teen numbers as ten ones and some more ones

  10. Unit 10

    Sort & Count

Sorting things into groups, counting each group, saying which group has more, and choosing a question we can answer by asking the class.

Learning standard: K.MD.3 · sorting objects into given groups, counting each group and ordering the groups by count
