From the Dawnland to statehood and beyond

What your child practices

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. The Wabanaki peoples lived in what is now Maine for thousands of years before Europeans came.
  2. Maine was part of Massachusetts until it became a state in 1820, under the Missouri Compromise.
  3. Mainers built ships and mills, and Acadia was the first national park east of the Mississippi River.

Example: In what year did Maine become a state? It split from Massachusetts. It was part of the Missouri Compromise, in 1820. Answer: 1820

Maine's Story in Maine

In the Maine Learning Results, this is unit 4 of 8 in 4th grade Social Studies, after Maine on the Map and before Maine Timeline.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
