Algebra Moves
Monomials and inequalities
What your child practices
Combining like terms such as 3x + 5x, evaluating expressions, and finding values that make an inequality true and showing them on a number line.
Maine Learning Results learning standard: 6.EE.A.2; 6.EE.B.8 · evaluating expressions with letters for numbers and writing inequalities of the form x > c or x < c
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- A variable is a letter that stands for a number.
- Add like terms: 3n + 2n = 5n.
- To evaluate, replace the letter with its number, then use the order of operations.
Example: Evaluate 2n + 3 when n = 4. Replace n with 4: 2 × 4 + 3. Multiply first: 8. Then add: 8 + 3 = 11. Answer: 11

Question 1
Evaluate 3n + 8 when n = 1.9.
3n + 8, n = 1.9
answer box
13.7
Hint: Put 1.9 in for n. Multiply first, then add.
Question 2
Which value of n makes 4n + 7 < 55 true?
4n + 7 < 55
- 14
- 10
- 12
10
Hint: Try each choice in the inequality.
Question 3
What is 2x + 9x?
2x + 9x
- 11x
- 11
- 18x
11x
Hint: Add the numbers in front. The letter stays the same, like adding apples to apples.
Question 4
What is 8n + n?
8n + n
- 9
- 8n²
- 9n
9n
Hint: n means 1n. So add 8 + 1.
Question 5
Which shows the solution to n < 7 on a number line?
- an open circle at 7 with an arrow pointing left
- an open circle at 7 with an arrow pointing right
- a closed circle at 7 with an arrow pointing left
an open circle at 7 with an arrow pointing left
Hint: An open circle means the number itself is not included. The arrow points to the numbers that work.
Question 6
What is 5n + 4n?
5n + 4n
- 20n
- 9
- 9n
9n
Hint: Add the numbers in front. The letter stays the same, like adding apples to apples.
