How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Anchor dates: Declaration of Independence 1776, Maine statehood 1820, Dred Scott 1857.
  2. Civil War 1861–1865, 15th Amendment 1870, Reconstruction ends 1877.
  3. To find years between two events, subtract the earlier year from the later one.

Example: How many years passed between Maine statehood and the start of the Civil War? Maine statehood: 1820. Civil War begins: 1861. 1861 − 1820 = 41. Answer: 41
