Picture Clues

Use pictures to read words

What your child practices

Using the picture and the first letter to read a word or a short sentence, a key early reading strategy.

Maine Learning Results learning standard: Reading 11 · how the pictures and the words in a book go together

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Look at the picture first.
  2. Read the words you know.
  3. Use the picture to help with a new word.

Example: The picture is a pig. Which fits? “I see the pig.” or “I see the cup.” The picture is a pig. Find the sentence that says pig. Answer: I see the pig.
