Multi-Step Equations

Brackets, fractions and both sides

What your child practices

Solving linear equations with brackets, fractions and variables on both sides, checking solutions, and turning word problems into equations.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: AI-A.REI.1; AI-A.REI.3 · solving multi-step linear equations and explaining each step

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Expand brackets first.
  2. Collect like terms.
  3. Then undo adding or subtracting, and finally multiplying or dividing.

Example: 2(x + 3) = 14 Expand: 2x + 6 = 14. Subtract 6: 2x = 8. Divide by 2: x = 4. Answer: x = 4
