Units & Accuracy

Let the units guide you

What your child practices

Using units to set up and check multi-step problems (gallons per minute times minutes), choosing sensible scales for graphs, and reporting answers to an accuracy that fits the measurements.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: AI-N.Q.1; AI-N.Q.3 · using units to guide multi-step problems, formulas and graph scales, and choosing a level of accuracy that fits the measurements

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Write the units with every number; they show which numbers to multiply or divide.
  2. Units cancel like factors: (gallons/minute) × minutes = gallons.
  3. Report an answer only as accurately as the measurements allow, and money to the nearest cent.

Example: A hose sprays 4 gallons per minute. How many gallons in 2 hours? 2 hours × 60 minutes per hour = 120 minutes. 120 minutes × 4 gallons per minute = 480 gallons. Answer: 480 gallons

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
