Fractions
Add, subtract, multiply, divide
What your child practises
Adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, and multiplying and dividing a fraction by a fraction.
Newfoundland and Labrador Curriculum curriculum outcome: Operation sense (by Grade 9) · adding and subtracting positive fractions and mixed numbers
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practise.
- To add or subtract, rename the fractions with a common denominator.
- To multiply, multiply the tops and multiply the bottoms.
- To divide, multiply by the reciprocal (flip the second fraction).
Example: 2/3 ÷ 1/6 = ? Flip 1/6 to 6/1 and multiply. 2/3 × 6 = 12/3. 12/3 = 4. Answer: 4
