How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Taking away means some go away.
  2. Start with the whole group.
  3. Count back the number you take away.

Example: 9 − 4 = ? Start at 9. Count back 4: 8, 7, 6, 5. Answer: 5
