Volume & Capacity

Cubes, litres and millilitres

What your child practises

Finding the volume of rectangular prisms, converting between litres and millilitres, and connecting volume to capacity (1 cm³ holds 1 mL).

Nunavut Curriculum approved guide: Alberta Mathematics K–9 (2007), Shape and Space · volume of right rectangular prisms

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Volume is the space inside a solid, in cubic units like cm³.
  2. Volume of a rectangular prism = length × width × height.
  3. 1 cm³ holds 1 mL. 1000 mL is 1 L.

Example: A box is 5 cm long, 4 cm wide and 3 cm high. What is its volume? 5 × 4 = 20. 20 × 3 = 60. Answer: 60 cm³
