What your child practices

Understanding division as sharing fairly and as making equal groups, and using multiplication facts to divide (3 × 4 = 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4).

Oregon State Standards learning standard: 3.OA.A.2; 3.OA.B.6; 3.OA.C.7 · division as sharing into equal groups and as an unknown factor, and dividing within 100

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Dividing shares things equally or makes equal groups.
  2. Think of the multiplication fact that goes with it.
  3. Ask: what times the divisor makes the number?

Example: 20 ÷ 4 = ? What times 4 makes 20? 4 × 5 = 20. Answer: 5
