Monomials and inequalities
What your child practices
Combining like terms such as 3x + 5x, evaluating expressions, and finding values that make an inequality true and showing them on a number line.
Oregon State Standards learning standard: 6.AEE.A.2; 6.AEE.B.7 · evaluating expressions with letters for numbers and writing inequalities of the form x > c or x < c
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- A variable is a letter that stands for a number.
- Add like terms: 3n + 2n = 5n.
- To evaluate, replace the letter with its number, then use the order of operations.
Example: Evaluate 2n + 3 when n = 4. Replace n with 4: 2 × 4 + 3. Multiply first: 8. Then add: 8 + 3 = 11. Answer: 11
Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
What is 6n + 2n?
6n + 2n
- 12n
- 8
- 8n
8n
Hint: Add the numbers in front. The letter stays the same, like adding apples to apples.
Question 2
What is 2y + y?
2y + y
- 2y²
- 3
- 3y
3y
Hint: y means 1y. So add 2 + 1.
Question 3
Evaluate 6n − 2 when n = 6.
6n − 2, n = 6
answer box
34
Hint: Put 6 in for n. Multiply first, then subtract.
Question 4
Which shows the solution to n > 7 on a number line?
- a closed circle at 7 with an arrow pointing right
- an open circle at 7 with an arrow pointing right
- an open circle at 7 with an arrow pointing left
an open circle at 7 with an arrow pointing right
Hint: An open circle means the number itself is not included. The arrow points to the numbers that work.
Question 5
Evaluate 6n + 8 when n = 3.9.
6n + 8, n = 3.9
answer box
31.4
Hint: Put 3.9 in for n. Multiply first, then add.
Question 6
Which shows the solution to n < 8 on a number line?
- an open circle at 8 with an arrow pointing left
- a closed circle at 8 with an arrow pointing left
- an open circle at 8 with an arrow pointing right
an open circle at 8 with an arrow pointing left
Hint: An open circle means the number itself is not included. The arrow points to the numbers that work.
