Algebra Moves
Like terms and inequalities
What your child practices
Combining like terms, evaluating expressions with decimals, solving two-step equations, and finding and graphing solutions to inequalities.
Oregon State Standards learning standard: 7.AEE.A.1; 7.AEE.B.4 · writing equivalent expressions and solving equations and inequalities
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Combine like terms: 5x + 2x = 7x.
- Do the same operation to both sides to keep an equation balanced.
- To check, put your answer back into the equation.
Example: Solve 3x + 4 = 19. Subtract 4 from both sides: 3x = 15. Divide both sides by 3: x = 5. Answer: x = 5
Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
Is x = 4 a solution of 2x + 4 = 12?
- No
- Yes
Yes
Hint: Put 4 in for x and check both sides.
Question 2
Which shows the solution to n ≤ 4 on a number line?
- a closed circle at 4 with an arrow pointing left
- an open circle at 4 with an arrow pointing left
- a closed circle at 4 with an arrow pointing right
a closed circle at 4 with an arrow pointing left
Hint: An open circle leaves out the number. A closed circle includes it. The arrow points the way the solutions go.
Question 3
What is 11n − 3n + 3n?
11n − 3n + 3n
- 11n
- 17n
- 5n
11n
Hint: Work from left to right. All the terms have the same letter.
Question 4
What is 9y − 4y + 1y?
9y − 4y + 1y
- 14y
- 4y
- 6y
6y
Hint: Work from left to right. All the terms have the same letter.
Question 5
Which value of n makes 3n − 1 < 8 true?
3n − 1 < 8
- 1
- 3
- 5
1
Hint: Put each choice in for n and check.
Question 6
Solve for x.
2x + 10 = 14

2
Hint: Undo the adding first, then undo the multiplying.
