Add & Subtract

Bigger numbers to 1000

What your child practises

Adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers by place value, number-line jumps and counting up, plus estimating by rounding to the nearest hundred.

Saskatchewan Curriculum outcome: N3.2 · addition and subtraction with answers to 1000

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Line up the ones, tens and hundreds.
  2. Start with the ones, then tens, then hundreds.
  3. If a place goes over 9 when adding, regroup to the next place.

Example: 276 + 148 = ? Ones: 6 + 8 = 14. Write 4 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12. Write 2 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4. Answer: 424

Sample questions

A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.

  1. Question 1

    About how much is 595 + 193?

    • 900
    • 1000
    • 700
    • 800
    Show answer

    800

Hint: Round each number to the nearest hundred: 595 is close to 600 and 193 is close to 200. 600 + 200 = 800.

  2. Question 2

A tree farm had 590 trees. It sold 506 trees. How many trees are left?

    🌲
    • 94
    • 84
    • 74
    • 96
    Show answer

    84

    Hint: Take away to find what's left: 590 − 506. Count up from 506 to 590: +4, +80. Add the jumps: 4 + 80 = 84.

  3. Question 3

    What is 512 + 48?

    512 + 48 = ?

    • 660
    • 550
    • 560
    • 570
    Show answer

    560

    Hint: Add each place: hundreds 500, tens 10 + 40 = 50, ones 2 + 8 = 10. Then 500 + 50 + 10 = 560.

  4. Question 4

A farm stand sold 417 apples on Saturday and 364 apples on Sunday. How many apples were sold in all?

    🍎

    answer box

    Show answer

    781

    Hint: Put them together: 417 + 364. Add each place: hundreds 400 + 300 = 700, tens 10 + 60 = 70, ones 7 + 4 = 11. Then 700 + 70 + 11 = 781.

  5. Question 5

    What is 658 + 51?

    658 + 51 = ?

    answer box

    Show answer

    709

    Hint: Add each place: hundreds 600, tens 50 + 50 = 100, ones 8 + 1 = 9. Then 600 + 100 + 9 = 709.

  6. Question 6

What is 996 − 160? Use the jumps.

    8008509009501000
    • 846
    • 836
    • 936
    • 826
    Show answer

    836

Hint: Jump back 100 from 996 to 896, then jump back 60 to 836.
